Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are typically caused by bacteria, parasites, and viruses through sexual contact. Sometimes these infections can be transmitted non-sexually, such as from mother to infant during pregnancy or childbirth, or through blood transfusions or shared needles. Most STDs affect both men and women, but in many cases the health problems they cause can be more severe for women. STDs often have no signs or symptoms, so it is important to do regular STD screening. You can treat them earlier before you may pass it on. This panel contains 8 different sexually transmitted pathogens that are relatively common (Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Mycoplasma genitalium, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Trichomonas vaginalis, Candida albicans, Gardnerella vaginalis, Streptococcus A/B).
